Las Cruces audiences are invited to a special live event at the Rio Grande Theater featuring a screening of the award-winning documentary THE DAY THE MUSIC DIED: The Story of Don McLean’s ‘American Pie. Taking place October 17th at 7:00 PM. The evening will bring the film’s music and storytelling to life with live music, a special introduction from singer/songwriter Don McLean, and a question-and-answer session with the filmmakers following the screening. The event is being hosted by the Las Cruces International Film Festival.
Presented by LCIFF as an immersive experience for music lovers and documentary fans alike, the program will pair the documentary’s compelling narrative with onstage performances before transitioning to a guided discussion where attendees can hear firsthand insights into the film’s creation and the enduring cultural impact of American Pie.
In 8½ minutes, singer-songwriter Don McLean defined an entire generation’s fears, disillusionment, grief, and even hope with the epic tapestry of the song “American Pie.” Noted film and music producer Spencer Proffer’s THE DAY THE MUSIC DIED: The Story of Don McLean’s ‘American Pie,’ offers stunning insight and remarkable context for the enduringly popular song. Unique among music documentaries, THE DAY THE MUSIC DIED goes far deeper than exploring an artist’s career, but takes an in-depth, cinematic look at the inspiration, creation, and influence of “American Pie,” and the way McLean’s song has become a touchstone that continues to inspire artists and music lovers today. Beginning with the February 1959 plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson – an event that becomes an integral part of McLean’s song – THE DAY THE MUSIC DIED: The Story of Don McLean’s American Pie highlights cultural moments in America’s history and tells the stories of the people who were a part of this tumultuous time. The film reveals the secrets and meanings behind McLean’s astonishing lyrics, and their influence in the past, today, and into the future.
Called “mandatory viewing for McLean fans or anyone who has marveled at his sonic treasure” by the Associated Press, THE DAY THE MUSIC DIED “provides invaluable context to one of the most enduring and original pieces of pop music ever composed” (Chicago Sun-Times, Richard Roeper). Music bible Billboard says THE DAY THE MUSIC DIED “will delight the song’s fans … neither the song nor McLean, have lost any of their potency a half-century later.”
THE DAY THE MUSIC DIED: The Story of Don McLean’s ‘American Pie’ is produced by Spencer Proffer, whose career as a music producer has spanned decades and included some of the most iconic acts in rock history. Proffer and his production company Meteor 17 bring dazzling audiovisual storytelling techniques to the film, reimagining the music for a modern audience. Proffer will be in attendance in Las Cruces for this special screening.

The 12th Las Cruces International Film Festival takes place April 14-18, 2027 and will be live and in-person at the Allen Theatres Cineport. Tickets and information are available at www.lascrucesfilmfest.com.

Two Men – Two Pianos – One Extraordinary Band!
Piano Men: Generations isn’t just a concert—it’s a high-octane, emotionally charged musical journey led by a father-son duo and a world-class band that takes audiences on a ride they won’t forget. At its heart are Terry and Nick—father and son, bonded by blood and a deep love for the music of Billy Joel and Elton John. Their on-stage chemistry is genuine, spontaneous, and moving—sometimes funny, always magnetic.
Terry, a seasoned musician with decades of orchestral and rock ‘n’ roll experience, commands the stage with authority and heart. Nick brings fresh energy, charisma, and powerhouse vocals, effortlessly blending his style with his dad’s.
Elevating the show is the live band—an electrifying ensemble of elite musicians who are stars in their own right. Guitar solos soar, basslines groove, and the rhythm section drives the performance with precision. At the core is drummer Mike Richau—the visual and sonic heartbeat of the band. With jaw-dropping stick flips, relentless energy, and razor-sharp timing, he turns every show into a spectacle. One moment he’s laying down a subtle groove, the next he’s launching into a thunderous solo—sticks flying, crowd roaring.
From the first chord to the final encore, the show is a rollercoaster of iconic hits, delivered with authenticity, showmanship, and a deep sense of legacy.
The result? A celebration of music, family, and unforgettable moments that span decades and bring generations together.
Whether you grew up on the vinyl of the ’70s or are discovering this music for the first time, Piano Men: Generations hits where it matters most—in the soul.
